Abuse: Beyond Bruises and Beatings
San Jose Domestic Violence Lawyer
Psychological Abuse
Abuse that is targeted to damage the psyche or the mind is known as psychological abuse. It occurs when one person tries to gain power and control over another. This often happens in abusive relationships between spouses, partners, or boyfriends/girlfriends.
Tactics
A psychological abuser has several means to put their victim into a role of submission and fear. They seek to make them feel worthless and dependent on the abuser. This can include:
- Put-downs or derogatory comments
- Ridiculing or blaming
- Isolation from family and friends
- Stalking or constantly checking whereabouts
- Controlling decision making and money
The Cycle of Abuse
Typically, psychological abuse follows a pattern. Part of the cycle is the honeymoon phase. This involves the abuser attempting to reconcile or “make-up” for his or her actions. Unlike arguments in healthy relationships, the tension arises once again and the abuse starts all over.
Serious Harm
Studies have shown that the effects of psychological abuse can include depression, acute stress, and Post Traumatic Stress disorder. The most severe cases can end in murder or suicide. In some cases, the side effects have been so severe that they have been linked to those of POWs from the Korean War.
If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship or has been the victim of domestic violence, there is a way out. You have the right to leave that relationship and your abuser to find help.
