After Divorce: Resuming Your Unmarried Name
One of history’s most famous plays poses the question “What is in a name?” In modern society the answer is everything. Many people attribute their identity, reputation, and status all to the letters that make up their name. It is for this reason, that most divorcees resume their unmarried name.
Is a Name Change Required?
Resuming your unmarried name finalizing a divorce is completely optional. You may retain your married name if you wish. You are even allowed to change your name to something completely new, just as long as this is not being done for fraudulent purposes. It is uncommon that court proceedings be required in order to change your name.
Who Must Be Notified
Any government agencies and private companies that have records of your name should be notified. A short list includes:
- Internal Revenue Service
- Social Security Administration
- Post Office
- Landlord
- Banks
- Credit Card Companies
The schools and colleges that your children attend should also be notified for emergency situations and contact purposes.
The Divorce Decree
Though it is not required, it may be useful for the divorce decree to state that you will be resuming your unmarried name. Once again, this is not necessary for the name change to be valid.
