Causes of Divorce
Every marriage is different from other marriages. As a result, each divorce is different from the other divorces. The causes of divorce are as varied as can be. With the “irreconcilable differences” option, many spouses never actually reveal their true reasons for divorce to the court or even their spouse.
One of the most commonly cited reasons for a divorce is the “irreconcilable differences” option. This can also mean that the couple had personality differences or any number of differences in their personal or career goals that meant that the marriage just was not going to work out. It can also mean that the couple was unable to manage or resolve the conflicts that occurred in the marriage.
Other reasons include a lack of commitment to the marriage, lack of communication between spouses, infidelity, and abandonment. For every divorce caused by lack of communication or lack of commitment, there is probably another one for alcohol or substance abuse.
On the criminal side, individuals often site physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, criminal behavior, and incarceration as reasons for divorce. Truly, one is not expected to remain married to an individual that is abusive or has been incarcerated for criminal activities.
Family problems are also an issue. Many couples divorce due to interference from the parents or in-laws in the marriage. Different expectations of household tasks can also play a role in ending a marriage. One of the biggest conflicts in a marriage can be about differences in how to raise any children that exist.
