Child Support and the Economy
Because of the continuing bear market and grim economic outlook, many divorced parents are finding it difficult to meet their child support payments and keep a roof over their heads. Many of these individuals originally agreed to child support arrangements when they had jobs and were making good money, but now find themselves out of work or underemployed and unable to make the payments on their lower income. The Figures
According to a survey conducted by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, a collection of family lawyers, 39% of member divorce lawyers polled said they had seen an increase in the number of people requesting a change in their child support agreement. The same survey found that 42% of the members polled had seen an increase in the number of alimony arrangement requests they were seeing.
These statistics are unsurprising, given the difficult economic climate. Men face an unemployment rate of 9.8%, while the unemployment rate for women is a bit smaller at 7.5%. Many divorced parents are continuing to pay costly child support payments out of their unemployment benefits checks or welfare, leaving little left over for themselves.
