Knowing the Terms
There are several terms associated with child support payments, with some of the most common being:
- Child support. Child support refers to a series of regular payments made to go towards the care of the child. To qualify as child support, a payment must be defined as such in the divorce agreement, must be a cash payment, and must go directly towards certain needs of the child or children.
- Obligor. The obligor is the parent making the payments, usually the non-custodial parent.
- Obligee. The obligee is the parent receiving the payments, usually the custodial parent.
- Changed circumstances. A changed circumstances document must be filed by the obligor if, for some reason, he or she is no longer able to make the agreed-upon payments.
These are just a few of the most common terms associated with support payments. If you have any questions, it may help to contact one of our experienced San Jose divorce lawyers.
