Children and Marriage
In the 1950s and before, it was commonly believed that the fastest and easiest way to achieve marital bliss was to add a baby to the mix. Regardless of whether the couple had been married for three weeks and was just figuring out how to live together or had been married for three years, it was believed that babies were the answer to every problem a marriage could encounter.
Now, however, there is increasing evidence that the easiest way to end a marriage that is having difficulties is to have a baby before working through the problems. Things do not get easy when a baby is added to the mix. In addition, the hormones of pregnancy do not make a couple less likely to get into a fight. If anything, pregnancy and a new baby are much more likely to cause the couple to argue than before the baby was born.
In addition, it is not a good idea to have a baby to fix a marriage. Babies do not fix marriages. They, frequently, make things very tough for a while, particularly in the first couple of weeks when no one gets any sleep because the baby must be fed every couple of hours.
Things do not get easier when the baby is older. Then arguments about how to discipline the child for acting up or bad grades will get in the way of the parents working through their own problems. Babies and children also can create huge financial strains on a couple, which will just add to any strain that is already felt.
