Divorce Support Groups
Many people are aware of the support networks available for those struggling with substance addictions or grieving the loss of a loved one. But did you know that groups also exist with the specific aim of helping those going through a painful divorce get back on their feet?
The need for compassionate and understanding ears is too often overlooked in divorce cases, which our culture has come to see as “private affairs.” However, in the absence of caring family members – and indeed, sometimes even when they are around to voice their opinions – a collection of individuals who can directly empathize with your struggles can be invaluable.
Divorce support groups are usually headed by a professional therapist, who can guide the discussion in a positive direction. Apart from this, there are many variables to consider when looking for a group that is right for you. Some of these include:
- The size of the group, with larger groups offering greater anonymity, but sacrificing a smaller group’s sense of intimacy.
- Male/female ratio: Sometimes co-ed groups can be helpful for understanding what your former partner might be going through. However, all female groups can focus on developing deep, positive relationships between members, while all male groups can safely express their feelings with a decreased sense of self-consciousness and embarrassment.
- Frequency of meetings. If you’re “in the thick of it,” perhaps meeting more than once a month is appropriate.
- Orientation: Considering any religious preferences or those of a specific social set can put you on the strongest path to recovery.
