Domestic Versus International Adoption
People choose to adopt children for a vast array of reasons, from difficulty conceiving children naturally to an impulse toward providing a loving home. Whatever the case may be, potential adoptive parents face a unique set of issues and questions that they must answer before going through with or even beginning the process.
One of the largest of these questions concerns where the child will come from. Before considerations of which specific shelters to look into, there is the choice between a domestic and international adoption.
While the motivations listed above might come into play in this decision, for those who are uncertain as to which route might be best suited for their situation, here are a few crucial differences between these two types:
- Expense Issues – The expenses of a domestic adoption depend on a vast array of factors, including fees of the agency or service you are using, attorney’s fees, the child’s ethnic origin, and possibly supporting the expectant mother. In international situations, much of the expenses have to do with issues of transportation that can add up very quickly.
- Travel – This is probably the most obvious point in identifying logistical differences between domestic and international adoption. Sometimes multiple trips for one or both parents are required, involving weeks taken off of work and plenty of investment in airline expenses.
- Classes and Training – The majority of international adoptions and some private ones do not require classes or training. In the U.S., however, some states require up to 25 hours of class time.
