Domestic Violence
San Jose Family Lawyer
Domestic violence, also called domestic abuse and spousal abuse, occurs when a family member, partner, or ex-partner attempts to dominate another adult in the family either physically or psychologically. It frequently refers to violence between spouses, but it can also include cohabitants and non-married intimate partners. Domestic violence is committed by both men and women.
Domestic violence comes in a number of forms. It includes:
- Physical violence
- Sexual abuse
- Emotional abuse
- Intimidation
- Economic deprivation
- Threats of violence
The violence can be criminal and includes physical assault (hitting, etc.), sexual abuse (unwanted or forced sexual activity), and stalking.
Many people fail to take into account passive abuse. Passive abuse is another component of domestic violence which is covert, subtle, and veiled. It includes:
- Victimization
- Procrastination
- Forgetfulness
- Ambiguity
- Neglect
- Spiritual
- Intellectual abuse.
Starting in the 1970, recent attention to domestic violence began during the women’s movement. The concern that women were being beaten by their husbands gained attention. Popular emphasis has been as the women as the victims. With the rise of the men’s movement, however, there is now significant advocacy for men who have been victimized by women. Masculism and men’s rights have played a large role in raising the awareness level for this issue. A variety of reports detailing hospital emergency room visits for domestic violence indicate that physically abused men represent just over one-third of the total patients admitted.
