Family Counseling
Family counseling is a type of psychotherapy, like marriage counseling or individual counseling, that has a variety of objectives all tied to the functioning of a family. One of the most common goals of family counseling is to promote better relationships among family members and a higher level of understanding.
In some cases, family counseling is incident specific. This type of counseling is common in situations where a family member is nearing death or when the parents’ marriage is being dissolved through divorce. At other times, family counseling may be used to work through the feelings of the entire family if one member is suffering from a mental or physical illness that is responsible for altering his or her behavior or habits in negative ways.
Usually, family counseling sessions are done with all members of the family present. While this is the norm, it is not always true. In some instances, a family member may not be able to attend due to drug addiction or alcoholism. The person that cannot attend may actually be the reason for the counseling.
Like group counseling, the therapist or counselor acts as a moderator. This person works to ensure that all members of the family get to voice their grievances and concerns and ensure that everyone contributes to the conversation.
Families that are having problems in the home frequently turn to family counseling not as a last resort but as a first attempt at resolving the tension in the home.
