Taking Care of Yourself during a Divorce
Going through a divorce will be a stressful and emotionally painful experience. There is no real way around that. That does not mean your situation is hopeless, however. There are plenty of things you can do to minimize the physical and emotional impact of a divorce. Because we like to see our clients stay healthy, here are a few tips from our San Jose family law offices.
Don’t be afraid to fall back on your support network. Most of us are uncomfortable asking for help, but just remember, we all need to do so occasionally. If you do not feel you are getting the kind of support you need from friends or family, search for support groups in your area or ask your doctor to recommend one.
Many people react to intense stress with physiological symptoms in addition to, or even instead of, emotional feelings. If you begin feeling sick, achy, lethargic, or show any other symptoms, make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible.
Be sure to eat well. It seems like such a small thing, but keeping your body running on healthy foods can make a huge difference in your feelings and even your outlook. Do your best to get enough fruits, vegetables, and protein to stay strong during this rough time.
Give yourself the personal time you need. During the chaos of court hearings, lawyer appointments, and perhaps caring for children, it is all too easy to put your emotional needs on the backburner. Try to find time, even if it’s just a few minutes here and there, to really let yourself experience whatever you may be feeling, whether it’s grief, anger, or something else.
