Custody Options
While each child custody agreement is unique in its own right, most fall into one of three major types:
- Sole physical custody arrangements. In sole physical custody, the child lives with a single parent, who makes the day-to-day decisions affecting the child. The other parent may have visitation rights.
- Joint physical custody arrangements. In joint physical custody, both parents share physical custody of the child, who lives parts of the year with each parent. They are both responsible for decisions affecting a child.
- Joint legal custody arrangements. Most child custody arrangements allow both parents to have legal custody of the child; both sole and joint physical custody arrangements can involve joint legal custody, which allows both parents to make big-picture decisions affecting how the child is raised.
