Last week, Duane Reade pharmacies in New York began selling Indentigene DNA paternity test kits. The tests are being sold for $29.99, but with additional lab processing fees, they cost around $300 total.
While the tests are considered to be over-the-counter, individuals wishing to determine paternity with one of Identigene’s tests must obtain approval from a physician or lawyer first. New York state laws require that the DNA tests be administered by a disinterested third party.
Many are skeptical about new over-the-counter paternity tests because they make a private issue very public. ”I’d be worried about privacy in a place like Duane Reade. The whole neighborhood shops here,” said one New York resident and Duane Reade patron.
