Gibson given 3 years probation for domestic abuse

Posted on March 15th, 2011 No Comments

Stemming from allegations of domestic abuse in January of 2010 from his former girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva, actor Mel Gibson plead no contest to charges of domestic violence in the Los Angeles Superior Court this past Friday.  Grigorieva called the police after the actor attacked her at their Malibu home on January 6th, 2010.  She had a black eye and two broken teeth after the incident.

A no contest plea allowed Gibson, 55, to enter a plea deal without admitting to committing domestic violence and will protect him from having civil damages filed against him by any victims.  With the plea deal, Judge Stephanie Sautner sentenced Gibson to 3 years of probation, a year of domestic violence counseling and 16 hours of community service.

National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Posted on October 4th, 2010 No Comments

October is recognized as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in order to raise awareness about the social disease that affects thousands of Americans every year.  According to recent statistics, 70 percent of Americans know someone who is or has been a victim or domestic violence.

Just last week, Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed a bill that would have California’s domestic violence shelters funded by a $10 increase on marriage license fees.  While many legislators are concerned with the message that Schwarzenegger’s veto sends, the Governor stated that he vetoed the bill because he believes the state needs to find a way to permanently fund shelters.

The Governor did sign another bill SB782 to protect renters from landlord retaliation if they are victims of an abusive relationship with their landlord.

Domestically violent men and women share similar personality traits

Posted on August 11th, 2010 No Comments

A recent study conducted by Zach Walsh, author and professor at The University of British Columbia, shows similarities between domestically violent men and women’s personalities.  The study groups men and women into three groups of personality types of domestic violence perpetrators.

The groups include: low pathology perpetrators who possess normal personality characteristics and are not likely to be violent outside of the relationship, dsyphoric perpetrators who suffer from some form of mental illness such as depression or anxiety, and antisocial perpetrators who exhibit signs of psychopathic personality traits and are likely to be violent outside of the relationship.

Walsh stated, “Theses new findings are among the first to highlight similarities between subtypes of domestically violent men and women”.  The study examined 567 civil psychiatric patients, including 138 women and 93 men with histories of domestic violence.

Charlie Sheen pleads guilty to domestic assault in plea bargain

Posted on August 4th, 2010 No Comments

Earlier this week in a Colorado court, 44-year old Two And A Half Men actor Charlie Sheen plead guilty to misdemeanor third-degree assault in the Christmas day attack of his wife, Brooke Mueller.  The plea was a part of a plea bargain to drop two other charges- a criminal mischief misdemeanor and a felony charge of menacing.

As a result of the bargain, Sheen will avoid jail time if he spends 30 days at a rehabilitation center, completes 30 days of probation and 36 days of domestic violence and anger management counseling.

This was not Sheen’s first time in court for domestic abuse.  In 1996, Sheen plead no contest to charges related to the attack of his girlfriend.  He was sentenced to serve two years probation.

Verbal abuse leads to physical abuse

Posted on July 28th, 2010 No Comments

After the recently released abusive phone messages from Mel Gibson to his girlfriend gained national attention, domestic violence experts and psychologists across the country are trying to remind people that verbal abuse leads to physical abuse 90 percent of the time.

Spokesman for The Center Against Family Violence in El Paso, Texas, Cesar Campa, states, “If they’re not respecting you, the best bet is to get out of the relationship”.  Though verbal abuse usually goes unreported, it is important to recognize when somebody is verbally abusing you and to trust your instincts.  ”You don’t have to wait until you’ve already been hit, or you’ve already been beaten and you’re on your way to the hospital.  If you are in eminent danger, if you feel that they’ve been threatening you, they’re harassing you and you feel like, ‘Yes, something is definitely going to happen,’ you can get help,” stated Campa.

New domestic violence registry connects California counties

Posted on June 17th, 2010 No Comments

A new software system is being launched in four California counties to connect a statewide domestic violence registry.

Marin, Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, and Orange counties are the first four counties to try the new system.  The system will allow users to search a database of scanned restraining orders.  It will also track harassment, workplace violence, juvenile cases, and elder abuse.

The California judiciary created the California Courts Protective Order Registry in order for judges to provide protective orders that are consistent across county lines.  They hope to include 20 counties by the end of the year, and all of California by 2013.

Animal Abuse Often Precedes Domestic Violence

Posted on June 2nd, 2010 No Comments

Recently the director of the Domestic Violence Advocacy Center in Mount Holly, spoke out against animal abuse in the home, which is often associated with other acts of domestic violence.   Abuse experts and animal advocates  believe that when one type of abuse is present in the home, other types are likely to arise. They often encourage law enforcement officials to become more widely trained across different domestic abuse areas in order to recognize the signs of violence.

Thomas Keen Jr., a New Jersey senator, argues, “Not only is there a very strong correlation between those that would abuse their pets and those that would abuse others, but in addition, what we have found is the abusers use the pet as an instrument of control over their family members”.
